Moulds


Here are some tips on the probable cause of some of the problems you may encounter in the making and use of your candles


Candle will not release from mould 

Insufficient stearin added. The amount is normally between 5% and 10% of the weight of wax  depending on the type of wax  you are using. Candle topped up over the original level allowing the wax to fill the cavity  created by cooling and contraction.

Insufficient contraction due to cooling too slowly.


Soapy appearance - Too much stearin


Bubbles of air on surface  - Wax poured too quickly


Top of candle blemished or dirty - Dirt in wax and/or mould


Cracks in candle - Candle too cold when topped up


Mould leaking

Wick hole not sealed properly.

Base not secured fully to tube ( pillar moulds).

Two parts of mould not secured (ball moulds).

Mould cracked


A dripping candle is caused by draughts, wax too soft , wick too narrow


Spluttering is caused by water in wick or around it


Drowning wick  wick too narrow, wax too soft, wick is loose and not firmly embedded in candle


Crater burned by wick is too small wax too hard, wick too narrow


Candle smokes wick is too large or there was a draught


Wick will not burn mould seal  or water on wick


Candle drips wax too soft, draughts
